Copper SFP

Copper SFP

Optone's Copper SFP transceivers offer a reliable and cost-effective way to convert optical SFP/SFP+ slots into copper RJ45 Ethernet ports. Supporting 10GBASE-T, 1000BASE-T, 100BASE-T, and 10/100/1000BASE-T auto-negotiation, these modules enable seamless, plug-and-play deployment either in the field or during production. Fully compatible with Gigabit Ethernet standards, they deliver stable high-speed connectivity over copper cabling. Contact us today to request the full Application Note or datasheet.

Product Overview

The OPTONE Copper SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) transceivers are high-performance, cost-effective modules designed for high-speed copper communication links. Unlike standard optical modules, these transceivers feature a compact RJ-45 connector assembly, allowing network administrators to utilize existing standard Category 5 (Cat 5/Cat 5e) or Category 6 (Cat 6a) copper cabling for data transmission.

Fully compliant with the SFP MSA (Multi-Source Agreement) and IEEE Std 802.3, these hot-pluggable modules support data rates ranging from 10/100/1000Mbps up to 10Gbps. Offering low power dissipation and high reliability, they provide an ideal, flexible solution for enterprise LANs, data centers, and network upgrades.

Key Features & Benefits

Hot-Pluggable SFP Footprint: Supports hot-swapping for seamless installation, configuration, and maintenance without powering down the host networking equipment.
Industry Standards Compliance: Fully compliant with SFP MSA specifications and IEEE Std 802.3-2002, ensuring excellent interoperability with leading switch and router brands.
Compact RJ-45 Interface: Equipped with a standard, high-quality RJ-45 connector assembly for secure and familiar Ethernet cable latching.
Low Power Dissipation: Engineered for energy efficiency, minimizing heat generation within high-density switch chassis.
I2C 2-Wire Serial Bus Access: Provides convenient access to the physical layer IC via a 2-wire serial bus, allowing for advanced module management and control.
Power & Cost Efficiency: Operates on a standard 3.3V single power supply, reducing the overall power budget of your networking environment.
Versatile Multi-Rate Support: Offers models capable of auto-negotiating 10/100/1000Mbps triple-speed or scaling up to ultra-fast 10G Copper performance.

Key Applications

LAN 10/100/1000Base-T Networks: Extending standard copper Ethernet connectivity to fiber-optic-oriented SFP slots.
Gigabit Ethernet over Cat 5 Cable: Cost-effective data transmission over existing twisted-pair copper infrastructures.
Switch to Switch Interface: High-speed interconnectivity between network switches within the same rack or adjacent rooms.
Router / Server Interface: Providing high-bandwidth network interface card (NIC) connections for servers, firewalls, and network appliances.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What is a Copper SFP Transceiver (SFP-T)?
A Copper SFP (also known as SFP-T or RJ45 SFP) is an optical-to-electrical transceiver module. It plugs into an SFP slot on a network switch or router but outputs a standard RJ-45 Ethernet port, allowing you to connect standard copper network cables (like Cat5e or Cat6) instead of fiber optics.
Q2: Can I use the SFP+-T module with standard Cat5 cables?
For the 10G SFP+-T module to reach its maximum 10Gbps speed up to 30 meters, we highly recommend using Cat 6a or Cat 7 shielded cables. Standard Cat5 or Cat5e cables are only rated for up to 1Gbps and cannot support 10G bandwidth reliably.
Q3: What is the difference between GLC-T-A and GLC-T-B?
GLC-T-A operates at a fixed data rate of 1000Mbps (1Gbps). It is ideal for dedicated gigabit connections.
GLC-T-B supports 10/100/1000Mbps auto-negotiation, meaning it can automatically adjust its speed to match older or slower legacy devices connected to the network.
